The 90s broke MTV wide open. Grunge wiped hair metal off the schedule, hip hop went from a Yo! MTV Raps segment to the whole network, alt-rock owned 120 Minutes, and by the end of the decade TRL had turned boy bands and pop stars into appointment TV.
